About Citronella
Citronella oil is one of the industrially important essential oils obtained from different species of Cymbopogon.. Although, all the plant parts contain oil, leaves contain the maximum amount of oil. Therefore, only the leaves is harvested The oil is widely used in perfumery, soaps, detergents, industrial polishes, cleaning compounds and other industrial products. It is classified in trade into two types: Ceylon Citronella oil which is extracted from Cymbopogon nardus Rendle and Java Citronella oil obtained from Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt. The main difference between these oils is the proportion of geranial and citronellal.
Citronella is planted as intercrop in the forest plantation by FPC. They harvested the grass and send it to different distillation units at Nilpara, Khutimari, Terghera
Field staff extracted citronella by distillation (steam distillation method). Recovery is higher in Java(0.7%-1.2%) low in Bengal variety(0.3%-0.5%).Oil is taken to central warehouse at Sukna and packaged centrally.
